Enhancing Teaching Skills Through Competition: NKU School of Information and Communication Holds Teaching Competition for Young Faculty

To thoroughly study and implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the guiding principles of the 20th CPC National Congress, and to implement the directives of the National Conference on Education and the reform agenda for building a high-caliber teaching workforce in the new era, as well as to carry forward the spirit of model workers, hard work, craftsmanship, and educators, the School of Information and Communication, NKU actively responded to the preliminary round of the 18th Tianjin Teaching Competition for College Young Teachers and held its own competition on November 27. Jiao Yanting, Vice Chairman of the NKU Labor Union, and Ms. Zhang Xue attended the event to provide guidance, accompanied by Vice Deans Chen Na and Wang Chen, who jointly witnessed the growth of young faculty members.

Focusing on Practical Training and Building a Platform for Growth

With the aim of refining teaching skills, gaining competition experience, and fostering professional exchange and development, the competition provided a professional stage for young teachers to showcase their teaching strengths and share expertise. The competition featured courses across multiple fields, including Digital and Intelligent Communication, Digital Humanities, Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence, and Introduction to Journalism, highlighting the School's distinctive features in new liberal arts development and interdisciplinary integration.

During the competition, nine teachers delivered 15-minute simulated lectures without students in a randomly assigned order. Incorporating advanced teaching methods, including Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and project-based learning (PBL), the teachers enlivened their sessions through case analysis, scenario simulations, and data visualization. By integrating core disciplinary competencies with practical instruction, they demonstrated both solid teaching foundations and innovative drive, reflecting their dedication and sense of responsibility in the new era.

 

Authoritative Evaluation to Enhance Teaching Quality

The judging panel consisted of Professor Liu Yunfeng, Professor Wang Fang, Professor Liu Zhongbo, Associate Professor Xiao Xue, and Associate Professor Tian Yizhou. All judges are experienced teaching experts with extensive frontline teaching experience and have received national- and provincial-level teaching awards. They evaluated the participants across five dimensions: teaching content, instructional design, methodological innovation, instructional delivery and demeanor, and teaching reflection.

In their comments, the judges highly praised young teachers for their progress in integrating ideological and political elements into their courses, synthesizing interdisciplinary knowledge, and applying multimedia tools. They also provided constructive suggestions on enhancing instructional logic, teaching pace, interactive effectiveness, and blackboard writing. During the interactive session, the judges shared their insights generously, providing comprehensive guidance ranging from conceptual updates to practical techniques. Young faculty members raised questions on teaching challenges and competition preparation, leading to lively discussions and shared educational perspectives.

Sharing Educational Philosophy to Strengthen Teaching Foundations

As part of the School's Year of Undergraduate Teaching Quality Improvement initiative, the competition further cultivated a strong culture of valuing, deepening, and innovating teaching through expert guidance and peer exchange.

In her remarks, Vice Chairman Jiao Yanting spoke highly of the competition's organization, affirmed the School's solid efforts in nurturing young teachers, and encouraged faculty members to strengthen their teaching fundamentals, learn new educational concepts, and advance steadily in their teaching roles. Vice Dean Chen Na concluded by emphasizing that faculty development has always been a core priority for the School. Moving forward, the School will continue to build platforms that use competitions to advance teaching, learning, and research, driving the continuous enhancement of teaching quality.
