Recently, the list of winners for the Tianjin division of the Fifth National Teaching Innovation Contest for College Teachers were announced. Tian Yizhou from our School won the Third Prize in the New Liberal Arts – Associate Professor Track for his course Television Editing.
Television Editing is a compulsory course for sophomore undergraduates majoring in Broadcasting and Television Studies. It is designed to develop students' audiovisual expression, creative initiative, and overall media literacy. The course centers on the basic principles and creative concepts of film and television editing. By incorporating emerging media formats and real-world project practices, it establishes a progressive three-stage training path of montage remixing, classic scene reproduction, and original short-film production to guide students from a purely technical orientation to a creative, expression-driven approach. The course combines thematic lectures with modular practical sessions, placing equal emphasis on theoretical understanding and hands-on skills. It highlights integrated training in technical application, narrative structure, and value communication. The course also employs an offline production + online sharing mechanism, encouraging students to publish their work on digital platforms to enhance their communication awareness and build professional confidence. The course is suitable for editing and producing various content formats, including short videos, microfilms, and promotional videos, supporting students' diverse career paths in the media industry.
Guided by the New Liberal Arts initiative, Tian restructured the course using a student-centered, competency-driven approach. First, with the goal of fostering innovation, he develops categorized course content and a three-stage progressive training plan. Second, aiming to enhance critical thinking, he reforms the traditional teaching process by adopting an integrated online-offline model. Third, to motivate independent learning, he promotes a competition-based practice, learning through practice model, advancing the educational philosophy of integrating competitions with instruction and industry with education. Fourth, harnessing technology to empower teaching, Tian introduces digital-humanities methods and advanced tools to enrich activities and enhance students' competencies.
Associate Professor Tian is a representative of our School's outstanding young faculty. In 2022, he won First Prize in the 16th Tianjin Teaching Contest for College Young Teachers with this course and was also recognized as a Model Outstanding Class Advisor by NKU that same year.
