On the afternoon of May 8, Shi Xiaoxi, a lecturer of the School of Journalism and Communication, NKU, was invited to the Appointment with Mentors - Afternoon Tea for Communication between Teachers and Students in Room 215 of Xiushan Hall. She delivered a lecture titled Academia and Life: No Balance, Only Choices!

At the beginning of the lecture, Shi quoted a famous saying by the renowned French writer and philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre: Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does. This set the tone for the lecture—balance is fleeting, and one must seize every important choice in life.

She then shared her three academic visits abroad, further emphasizing the core idea that fortune comes randomly, and one must plan ahead for their future.

In her lecture, Shi shared the key takeaways and academic achievements from her research visits abroad. She detailed co-authoring papers with foreign mentors, attending international academic conferences, and inviting renowned professors to NKU for curriculum review and collaborative discussions.

Shi went on to share her views on how to study film theory, noting that learning theory requires both historical and comparative perspectives, while studying it calls for an appropriate analytical approach. She then provided a focused explanation of her own research from three dimensions: new ideas, new perspectives, and new methods.

Finally, Shi concluded the lecture on its main theme, Academia and Life: No Balance, Only Choices! She encouraged everyone to define their own value system and engage with the world in their own way, and exhorted them with the words: Work hard, and make your efforts meaningful.

In this session of Appointment with Mentors, using her experience as a visiting scholar as a gateway, Shi discussed academia and personal life, stressing the importance of making wise choices and seizing opportunities. She encouraged students to plan ahead for more opportunities, addressed their questions about balance, and inspired attendees to reflect on managing their academic and personal pursuits for a more rewarding future.
